Attached you can find a short prezi presentation on ELL strategies I used with a 5th grade struggling reader I worked with during my observations in a mixed abilitiy classroom for 4th-7th graders.
You used three great strategies for a struggling reading. Your first strategy of mapping I believe sounds very interesting, did the student enjoy it? Will you continue to us these strategies?
The student loved the hands on building of the words with the unifix cubes. It is a strategy my cooperating teacher helped develop and it is now one of their morning tasks to complete different words each time they do the activity.
I was just about to ask what Unifix Cubes were, but now I'm seeing your reply to Kylie. Sounds like your teacher has developed a great teaching strategy similar to chunking, right? Since the student is in 5th grade and is reading at a 1st grade level, I'm curious to know more about the student's cognitive abilities and other road blocks he faces.
